Get a used one. U'll save a lot. But, make sure there are no problems with it. If you live outside USA, get it from your friend/relative in USA, ask them to buy from eBay and carry it with them, next time they come. Custom duties are very low in USA.

And... try and forecast your needs for next 2 years, and choose a P4 or better model. Bcoz, if you wish to use some heavy applications, office, games, etc, a year later, upgrading will be impossible or expensive. If you foresee your needs rise after a year, get a good and powerful model... go for financing options.

There really isn't a "cheap" laptop you might as well get you a used one. It's a good alternative to buying a new one if your only wanting to put just internet on it.

Check to see if ou have a local Freecycle Website. I have often seen one advertised on the Aberdeenshire site. These sites allow people to advertise items for which they have no further use. All items are FREE but most have to be collected. The idea behind the idea is to re-cycle rather than dump. Good luck.

You can try craigslist, eBay, high tech companies sell their outdated equipment to surplus computer stores, see if one is in your area. Even local pawnshops may have them, they don't always know what they are selling so you may get a really good laptop for cheap.

Look for built in network ports or if on dial up a modem port, or at least a PCMCIA slot.

www.newegg.com- Acer is a great generic brand- works really well without having to pay extra for all the advertising and brand recognition. All the real computer geeks buys them, and they know what to buy.
