I'm volunteering at an event....based on these instructions, should I wear a floor length evening gown or a shorter, more casual dress????
Time: 5:30 pm-9:30 pm.
Dress Code: This is a formal event, so volunteers must dress up. That means gentlemen in suits and ladies in evening wear.

Why not be really safe and go for a flowing dress that evening attire in almost to the floor lenth.

Evening wear usually means floor length, but there are some nice knee or tea length cocktail dresses that may work too. If evening wear is specified for the guests you will most likely see the ladies in floor length gowns if they are older than say ... 30. Younger women may go more casual.

05:30 to 09:30 would mean little black dress for me, but evening wear definitely means floorlength, so this invite is contradicting itself there. in that situation i would go for a floorlength, not very elaborate dress in a fairly neutral colour, no reds, pinks, oranges or royal blues. the idea is to be dressed appropriately for the occasion without outshining the guests. something along these lines maybe?

I wouldn't wear a prom dress, but I think you should wear like a long black dress! Something elegant!

The point is to blend in. Volunteer and be fabulous doing it! Girl, you know you have that dress just begging to be worn! I hope you enjoy yourself!
