We have 2 kids born with a life-threatening genetic condition and would love to have another child without. Chances are 50:50 so have been offered PGD. Unsure about this. Does anyone have experience of this or IVF in general?

Maybe there's a misunderstanding here - we have been offered IVF with PGD which tests early-stage embryos for the genetic condition, then only implants an embryo which has been screened as free of the condition. So when you say why do we want another child with that high risk, this procedure would allow us to have a child free of this condition - wouldn't you? We have been offered this because we want another child who doesn't suffer from this, yet we said that if we conceived naturally we would not have the baby screened antenatally as we could not terminate it. This procedure, if successful - and the rates are not high - would make our dreams come true. This is not really a moral debate, I'm just wondering if anyone can share any personal experience of the procedure.

I think it depends on what you plan to do with the knowledge of whether the child will have this disorder or not. Keeping my personal opinions on abortion aside that's a decision you will be faced with. Obviously it would be better for everyone if the child is well, but if it is already conceived and you would terminate the pregnancy, would it be to spare the child from the possibility of a difficult life or yourself of having to deal with seeing the effects of this awful disease on your child?

It sounds to me like you already have made up your mind. Go with what your heart tells you. IVF is emotional process. You spend almost $10,000 each cycle and there is no guarantee that you body will keep the embryo. Then there is a higher chance of a miscarriage. Having had a miscarriage myself, I can tell you it's very rough to go through. The good news with a little time and a lot of money everyone I know who's tried IVF has had a healthy baby. ( One of them even picked the sex of the baby)

Yeah, I have.

My wife and I both carry cystic fibrosis. We went through PGGD twice (three IVF cycles, one we called off before retrieval). Neither resulted in pregnancy. Out of money, we re-evaluated, and opted to get pregnant naturally, and test. Thankfully, our child is healthy, and is due in a few weeks.
