I just moved into a new home and would like to have a water softener installed. The main water supply (shut off values) is located in the coat closet though. I don't want to put a water softener in the coat closet. The house is on a slab foundation. Can we put the water softener some where else? If so, what are our options?

There's no point in having a water softener unless it feeds all the water outlets in the house. You really want soft water for showering, clothes washing and your water heater, so you want to make sure you can connect the softener in a spot that will feed all these things.
I recommend that you bite the bullet and put the softener in the coat closet. That will be the easiest, cheapest and best place to install it. If that simply won't work, call a plumber and have him/her look over your plumbing system and give you more specific advice.

You can basically put the softener anywhere that you have room and access to plumbing.
Putting it off the main is of course the best option because it will then cover the entire house. Since this location is tight, if possible relocate it next to the water heater for the house. You can then take that cold water line that would normally feed into the water heater, redirect it into the softener, then reconnect it the feed from the softener back into the house loop.

Because you're on a slab, it's difficult. Is there nothing in the garage that's part of the system??
You're going to have to install the softener either BEFORE it comes into the house, or at that main shutoff in the closet. There are no other options. I know that isn't what you wanted to hear. I haven't seen your house, but chances are a plumber will tell you the same thing.

You could put it somewhere else as long as you can run the 2 needed lines to and from it. One from the main water supply to the softener and then back to the main water supply again.

I like the answer for near the water heater. Obviously install the softener on the cold side before it tees so it can be used for both cold and hot in the whole house.

If you just want the water to use in the sink then you can put it under the sink but if you want it throughout the house then go to the hotwater heater and see if there is a cold water and hot water running side by side then you can plumb it in there if there is room.

You can connect one anywhere you want to change the water. If you want the difference to be in the kitchen, for drinking, cooking, etc... and the shower, hook it up just before whichever comes first, kitchen or bath. If your bathroom water lines are before the kitchen lines, then you hook it up there and that will take care of the kitchen also. Or vice-versa

no, you can have the softener hooked up only to the faucets that you want soft water from
