There's a lot of good advice here. Reading is an excellent one. You'll learn a lot from books, not only content-wise, but on how the language is used and various terms in the common English vocabulary. Having a dictionary handy is a good idea too.

Watching English programming is another good one. I know quite a few folks who learned to speak English by watching English TV or listening to the BBC World Service. Hearing a natural speaker speaking the language helps tune your ear to understanding it.

Also, practice speaking it. Mimic the radio and television. Try to force yourself to ennunciate and pronounce words the way natural speakers do.

Another is forcing yourself to use correct English grammar, spelling and punctuation when you do use it. That includes on the web. People get lazy online, and it's really detrimental, especially to people trying to learn the language.

Good luck!

A decade ago to learn English, you had to attend costly English classes or purchase course material like tapes and books. Now you can learn English for free from the comfort of your home using the internet. The BBC and the British Council offer a number of online courses which teach written and spoken English. You can also improve your English by watching television programs and reading English newspapers. For more information, visit http://tinyurl.com/qnzpt

Read a thick book on anything. Read it out loud, whether you are with some one or alone. By the time you reach the end of the book, not only will your vocabulary be increased, but so will your reading retention. And you English will improve a thousandfold.

Experience is really the only way to become more proficient in a language. You've got to practice your English.

There are some tools out there that help with vocabulary building. One good software that I recommend to anyone studying a language is Rosetta Stone. It's very expensive, but it's probably the best language learning software out there.
