Maybe there was something wrong, like painfully, and he got rid of the problem.

If your male hamster is residing with a female, its testicles might have got chewed off or bitten while he attempts to bang her @the wrong time! Female hamsters can be very nasty when approached by males @the wrong time especially if it's not her ovulation period. Hamsters like to nurse themselves by licking the wounded areas. You probably had misundestood that as chewing his own testicles.

If this is truely the case, my advise is to separate the male and female and allow him to heal completely. Introduce him back to her again and monitor if fights happen again. Separate them immediately once they become nasty.

Tip: Always introduce the female into the male cage and not the other way round. This way, the female will feel less defensive.

Get the hamster to a vet at once! There's something wrong and only the hamster know what is wrong now. you need a vet to give the hamster a good check.

Have you tried asking an expert? If you haven't already I suggest taking him to the vet.

You know, I think a lot of hamsters are messed up, because they are inbred, generation after generation.
