I think there are a lot of good guitar players out there and some guitarists are great in certain songs, but the best guitarist of all time that always delivers is Slash. Slash is the lead guitarist of the former Guns'n'Roses, but is now the lead guitarist of Velvet Revolver. Check any Velvet Revolver song or any old Guns'n'Roses song to see what you think.

I do know a lot about music, since you asked. There are many guitar players I love (Marc Bolan, Van Halen, Hubert Sumlin, Eddie Hazel, Jimmy Page, Jay Donnellan, etc.) but the ne plus ultra will always be Jimi Hendrix. One song that especially moves me is the live performance of Red House on the "Jimi Hendrix Experience" box set. Over 15 minutes, he builds from a crystal clear meditation to the height of near- electronic guitar savagery - all with complete control. For a shorter example, check out Come On, Pt. 1 from "Electric Ladyland." On this cover of Earl King's song, Hendrix goes so far into the stratosphere, you can hear the rhythm section trying to keep up. And when he ends the solo with some sweet Wes Montgomery chords - perfection. No one else can touch him on the guitar. His songwriting and singing are also fantastic. Since Hendrix, all rock guitar starts with Hendrix.

As a guitarist, I would consider - what, with their varying styles and techniques - the following......

Eric Johnson - "Cliffs of Dover" - One of the most (if not the most) accomplished guitarists, ever. His versatility, technique and overall knowledge of the instrument is second to none. A true "student" of the guitar.

Steve Hackett - "Dancing With The Moonlit Knight" - He has a very unorthodox approach to the guitar. Be it blues, jazz, classical or rock - Hackett has mastered it all. One of the music world's most underrated guitarists.

Joe Satriani - "The Journey" - From his technically proficient and cerebral compositions to his more lyrical and soulful playing, "Satch" is one of the best. There are many more aspects to his playing than just shredding.

Alex Lifeson - "Freewill" - Another guitarist who uses a very different approach. Although, his abilities are often overshadowed by his Rush bandmates, he is a very innovative and stylish player.

For me there are 2 persons.

1.Randy Rhoads
He combined the elements of Classical Music into the World of Heavy Metal, notably in "Crazy Train" and "Mr Crowley" to name a few. His best works in my opinion are "Over The Mountain" and "Dee". He was a great influence to me and many other guitarists today, ranging from Yngwie Malmsteen to the guitarist of Evanescence. Unfortunately, he only lived till 25 yrs old. He died in a freak accident in 1982.

2.Jason Becker
Some say he was the best rock guitarist in the world, he even played in David Lee Roth's band, but a disease ruin everything. Jason Becker cannot move his arms or legs anymore and the only way he can have contact with others is using his eyes. Amazingly, he still continue to compose music. He's an inspiration not only for guitarists, but anybody who needed hope.

Eric Clapton is good...the slow hand, but I think the greatest guitar player was Randy Rhoads, nobody played the guitar like he did. Too bad he had to leave us. Every song he played, he played with passion...really hard to pick just one. I chose Randy for the simple fact he was a classical guitar player first and a rock and roller second...you can hear it in his riffs and he didn't just play for himself, but played his heart out for his fans. A great loss to the Rock and Roll scene world wide. Peace out Randy, me and the crew really miss you.

My husband says: Randy Rhoades-
Because he always strived to be better....every town he would find someone that could teach him more.
He combined classical and his own style.
