Freezers with R600a refigerant do not operate when ambient temperature gets near to zero celcius. My solution is to install a small heater to keep the compressor and evaporator warm. Has anyone tried this or looked to alternate solutions?

consider using a thermostat to control the heater off & on at the lowest temp it'll work. lightbulb might work.
old freezers had crankcase heaters for such situation.
at 0 i'd think if the unit wont run & shuts down & restarts, the contents wont thaw. good luck.

I would say your freezer is low on the coolant. It should run fine no matter what the temp is outside. If you have it checked, I'll bet they say it is low. It would be much cheaper to do this than installing a heater.
