Well, this originated from chariot racing, when the cariot were raced anticlockwise. However in answer to the question, i believe it is because most people are right handed/footed and therefore have more strength in this side. Running anticlockwise uses more power from the outside leg. It is easier and more comfortable for this to be your right leg!

The slap in the face one isn't true. And horse racers do race anti-clockwise (Epsom Derby)
Like the question. It's one of those weird mystery's.
I think the Chariot answer guy is right.
It's just a preference i think.

It's not so much easier than it is rebellious.It's my understanding that Americans started running their races counterclockwise as a slap in the face to the English or British,I'm not exactly sure which,because they race clock wise.They still run their horseraces that way.

because there's a larger percentage of proper-exceeded / proper-footed people contained in the international. that's more desirable tender to run round a bend with your maximum useful leg on the exterior. Logical in case you imagine about it.
