I was in Canterbury, England at Christmas 1977. At dinner, our waiter said "I can tell you aren't English -- where are you from?"

My dinner companion said "We are Americans."

He replied "I'm American, too. I'm from Argentina -- what country are you from?"

From that point on, I have made a point of saying "I'm from the United States" when asked where I am from.

United States of America is the name of our COUNTRY.

North America, Central America, South America - those are all names of continents which is why people from "countries" on those "continents" are not referred to as Americans, because the word "America" is nowhere in the name of their "country".

Technically they are Americans, that is their Continent, but they go by their country's name, Mexicans from Mexico. We are from the United States of America, that makes us Americans because America is part of our country's name! Tell me you do not get that!

Because Mexico is called Mexico, not Mexico of Central America.
