I'm going to a evening fundraiser (6:30). Tickets were $100 each; the event is a cocktail-type party at a gentleman's home. I was told it is a "formal" event and that men should wear suits (not tuxes!) and ladies should wear "evening wear."

Do I wear a floor-length black dress (fairly simple, no sequins) or a knee-length dress (black with purple flowers and a full skirt).

To me, "formal" means a floor length dress. But, if men are only supposed to wear suits (not tuxes), would that be too dressy? Should I stick with the shorter dress?

ahhh, the joys of figuring out what to wear. Everyone has a different opinion!!

The invitation only said "formal" and "evening wear." My UNDERSTANDING of the night is that it is a cocktail party (it is a home tour, drinks, finger foods, etc.)....I could be wrong on some of that.

Again, when I hear "formal", I think LONG dresses. But if the men are only in suits, I think that could be too much. I don't really know anyone else that is going that I could ask.........

NO, go for the long one. Evening and formal for me are: long and dark. You'll look stunning. Keep the longuette for an afternoon or a smart evening some other time.

Cocktail party= cocktail length. Meaning JUST BELOW THE KNEE. Look at Eve Longoria's dress for the emmy's. It was a great length. Any color that looks good on you is also ok. Dark plum seems to be out in abundance. If you wear black you will blend in with all the other clones. If you must wear black spice it up with a great jeweled strappy sandal. Don't go nuts with the accesories. As Coco Chanel said, "Look in the mirror before you go out then take off one thing." Good luck and have fun!

If it's a cocktail party, then I would definitely say to wear a cocktail dress! Cocktail dresses are normal knee length, so I'd go with the black one that has the purple flowers.

Make sure your makeup is glamorous - flawless skin, then either smoky eyes and neutral lips or sexy, bright lips and neutral eyes (just a touch of mascara and liner). Chose a glamorous style for your hair - big red-carpet style curls add instant glamour. Check the small details too, such as underwear, nails, eyebrows etc.

I'm sure you'll look gorgeous! x

Either choice would be fine. You'll probably see both types there but I suspect more short length dresses since the event is at someone's home & not a hall. Choose the one that you are most comfortable in. When in doubt, it's always better to be over dressed than under dressed for these occasions.

If the men are in suits, then the shorter dress would be perfect (sounds very nice by the way). You'll look smart and dressy without going over the top.

i dont think you should wear the floor length dress because the party doesnt require men to wear tuxes but i think it would be pretty to wear just an AWESOME black dress or a color that would look good on you! good luck! you can still go shopping !

a cocktail dress will do perfectly, a floor length black dress may prove to be dowdy, frumpy and yes too dressy, adjectives you may not want to be associated with. shorter is so the way to go.

the simple balck dress is your best bet! if the shorter dress was solid balck then it may be appropriate, but the fact that it has flowers printed on it, i would question it a little. do you know anyone else who is going to attened that you could ask their opinion?

I would wear whatever makes me more comfortable...but, I think you should go with the longer dress. It's more classic and elegant.
