If we're not talking about a car, a trailblazer is someone who, either literally or figuratively, goes out ahead of everybody else into unmarked territory.

The Appalachian Trail and many other hiking trails are marked with blazes: splashes of paint of a certain color on tree trunks or rocks. If I'm hiking and can't tell which path is the right one, I look for the blazes to stay on the right trail and keep from getting lost.

The trailblazer--the one who makes the blazes--has to find his or her own way in order to show the way to others.

This is sometimes used as a metaphor to describe a person making new discoveries that help other people make new discoveries. For example, Newton was a trailblazer in the field of physics, so was Einstein. Freud and Jung were trailblazers in the study of human mind.
