ok there are three knowbs. One for hot one for cold and one for shower or tub flow. The hot water handle was installed so that when I turn it to the left, it turns on, and the the right it turns the water flow off. How can I fix this myself?

Sounds like you're talking about a shower diverter not a faucet. Do you mean that the handles turn counter-clock wise to start the flow?

Some tub faucets are made this way. On a 3 handle tub faucet that is. I believe Gerber is one of them. If I remember right, When you grab the hot and cold, Both should turn inward towards the shower diverter

Use the water turn off value behind the tolet. Disassemble the poorly put together tolet guts, throw the guts away, go down to the local hardware, not Wal-Mart, and purchase new guts, and finally have lunch and wait for your husband to return and show him how to assemble it properly. When you are finished, let him know that from now on it is his problem.

That wouldn't be an installation error, that would be a fabrication error. Was the faucet made in Poland?

if the faucet has detachable handles then you can disassemble the handles and swap them but if it works then why bother.

If you paid someone to install it (who doesn't know what they're doing, obviously) then get them back there. If not, ???
