It's really not the case. It's supposed to be, not to wear white "in excess" after labor day. Meaning, you can still wear white, but not an entire outfit or anything.

I too, have always wondered this.
I like (and strive) to be different (and walk to the beat of my own drummer) and wear white all year long. (Ergo: Winter White).
