Talking to people on the internet I've found they get very confused.
I literally had to draw one guy a diagram to explain the difference between Great Britain and the UK. And to explain why only part of Ireland is in the UK. And that Wales is not a county in England.

Quite a few people do but it's hardly suprising given that the British media is primarily based in London and is hugely biased in favour of London and England.
There are approximately the same number of people living in Scotland as there are in London but the amount of prominence given to Scotland and Scottish issues would make you think it had a population of about 2. Similarly the same happens with Wales and Northern Ireland.
I'm from England myself and have travelled to many countries where it's not uncommon to find people who think Wales and Scotland are parts of England in much the same way as Cornwall or Kent are.
Just to clarify one one or two of the above answers - Ireland is not part of the United Kingdom, Northern Ireland is a province which is part of the UK but Ireland (Eire) is a country in it's own right.
For anyone not familiar with the UK - Scotland is the bit at the top, Wales is the bit on the left, Northern Ireland is the bit you have to swim to and the bit that remains is England.

No, it depends on your knowledge. The UK is England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland combined. But you're actually hearing more of England than of the other three countries I think.

If you're talking about people from the US, most people here have a hard enough time with our own geography let a lone another country. But I think since most news comes from England most people assume UK is the same as England and vice versa. Let me ask you this, did you think Russia was the only country in the former USSR or did you know Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, ect all made up USSR. Same thing really.

Stupid people!!! Each of the Countries in the UK are unique in their own right. That should be the first question at immigration point. The ones that think that it is only one Country should be sent back!

most people do unless they are from( wales - scotland or northern ireland )- which are all part of the united kingdom including england - scotland is to the north at the top and northern ireland is just across the irish sea to the west of scotland. Wales is to the west next to the west midlands of england.

Absolutely. Before I moved to Europe, I thought Wales was a county or state of England, and Scotland was its own nation.

Most people in the U.S. do. Check me on this one -- the United Kingdom consists of England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland, correct? Gee, and I went to public school...
