(since i'm not your "typical" female [i'm not being judgemental; i'm just speaking very generally, for lack of a better term], i have trouble making female friends, and have been wondering about this question for years...)

well... we actually talk about many things but hardly ever love interests ,sex, fashion, makeup etc...we just talk about life in general... current events, everyday things that happen in our lives, if that happens to be about boyfriends /husbands , kids, school, work , health, movies, yards, gardening, home repairs, exercising, Angels , God etc... whatever comes up...

We talk about our jobs and work. We talk about religion, politics, current events, whatever comes up. No topic is off limit when you are with a true friend. Even your stupid and silly ideas are welcome to be shared.

You may have trouble making friends because you are talking to the wrong women. Don't try to pick your friends based on looks, popularity, or another shallow reason. You should pick your friends from the people who have common interests as you.
If you are in a book store, strike up a conversation with the people in the same isle as you. Talk about authors and books that you like or dislike.
Join a club, take some class, find a way to spend your free time doing something you enjoy or want to learn. Then you have a pre-made selection of possible friends. The women (and men) are there because they have the same interest as you.

Remember this saying when trying to make friends, it's a good start for what to talk about in conversations for beginning relationships.

"Small minds talk about people. Average minds talk about events. Large minds talk about ideas."

Books, movies, music
Environmental issues (global warming, recycling, etc.)
World affairs and politics (the world since 9/11, the situation in the Middle East)

www.electricminds.org is a good place for a non-typical female to have non-typical discussions.

It seems when where in elementry and junior high girl freinds come and go. Then in high school you have your click. Usually girls that live in your neighborhood then in college you probably hang out with girls that are in your dorm after that you seem to be left stranded and find it hard to make connections. That's why i have a lot of guy friends.
But to asnwer your question..
babies/children - I have one
romantic interest/love/sex - I have one of there too..
fashion/ hair/maikup - I'm great at it
diet/fitness/selfimage - can care less about what i eat and how i look sometimes.

I hardly ever talk about any of those things with any of my friends.

Politics
What has happened to me recently
funny things I've heard, said, read
stuff from books I've been reading

Actually, just about anything and everything except love, fashion, diet, and babies.

If what's going on is that all your friends talk only about these things, and those topics bore you, and you can't get a change of subject, you need different friends.

We talk about a myriad of things from careers, as many of us have worked most of our lives and some of us are co-workers, we discuss office politics, our employers, coming events related to our employment. Also many of us are attending college and we talk about our education, where we want it to lead us, why we have re-entered the educational domain, our classes, instructors even homework. We talk about the world in general, wars, politics, religions as well as cultures, including our own cultural, religious, political differences. Those topics you described are usually topics younger women discuss as opposed to the over 25 crowd or those of us who have been married/divorced, don't care that much for fashion as opposed to comfort and functionality and wear, we are concerned about our health but not as it pertains to our "self image" or what we see in the mirror but rather our longevity as well as quality of life. Yes we do talk about our offspring, usually discuss THEIR career goals as well as education as most of us have children in their teens and early twenties.

Basically, what did you do yesterday? That's the usual. How's life, what's on your mind kind of questions. We complain when someone hurts our feelings or does something rude to us. That's what I usually talk about with my friends. Plus the things you said, but generally speaking, just say what's on your mind.
