I think it has to be a .wav file .

MP3's can not be converted to HTML. In order to play it, your best bet is to add a flash/shockwave mp3 player (there are MANY out there) to your site. Then upload the MP3 to your web server and point the player to its location. Exact directions should be in the documentation of any player you use.

There are loads of ways to do it to be honest... I've added in some dreamweaver code which plays a sound file when the web page loads (you'll have to change the file locations to an actual MP3)
