Ben Franklin suggested the idea when he was the Ambassador to France after the American Revolution.

It was introduced during WW I.

WWII, but that wasn't the primary reason. Originally it was done to give mid western famers more "daytime" with better hours, otherwise they'd be up at 4 am.

Then with the oil crunch of the 1970s Nixon tried a failed experiment to make it full time to conserve energy.

So argri-business, war and oil shortages all helped to make Daylight time a popular tool.

dst was first put into practice by the germans during WW1. Other countries quickly followed.
