Alternative medicine is for prevention and maintaining your health. The traditional medicine is for treatment of an illness or emergency. I incorporate both into my life to improve my quality of life.

First off, let me respond to Betty's comment about a broken leg. Absolutely, a medical doctor is the better choice for something like that. However, it is very possible that the leg break could have been prevented by an alternative medicine practitioner such as a chiropractor or a physical therapist. Many sports injuries are caused by a lack of proper proprioperception. What is proprioperception? It is the ability of your joints and body parts to know where they are in space, without you looking. If your proprioperception is not "in sync", the opportunity for your to fall and break something is greatly increased, whether just walking or even skiing.
Now, let me discuss the term "better" in your question. Better, in the sense of response to disease or injury, may well be handled more appropriately with traditional medicine. Let's call it "sickness" care. Better in terms of overall health and wellness and prevention, alternative medicine has a far greater edge. Call it "health" care.
Now, the last subject is safety. This should be of great concern. The New England Journal of Medicine, one of the most highly respected publications in traditional medicine, put out an article regarding our health care in the U.S. It was noted in that article that traditional (called alopathic) medicine is the 4th leading cause of death in the U.S. behind heart conditions, cancer, and strokes. More than 15,000 people a year die from complications from taking aspiring.
Unfortunately, the U.S. has the most highly technological advanced health care, yet they are rated 37th (!!) in the industrialized world for health care systems. Our delivery system of care (managed care, insurance, etc.) is horrendous.

i really do agree with supermodel too. but people take granted with their health. when they fall sick or something, then they seek medication. BUT if in the first place, with the help of alternative medication, people would have prevent themselves from getting sick. unless u get into an accident then that's fate. BUT then again, alternative medicine do speeds up the recovery too! alternative and traditional medicine can be incorporate together to compliment each other..

Depending on who practices the "alternative".Most of the times the effect is what is called a placebo where nothing is done but the patient believes that he is being healed.
Of course some change of habits and medicinal herbs can be useful to prevent illnesses but you have to go to a real doctor to be sure that you are doing well.

Yes. Absolutely. No doubt about it. Didn't feel that way until I experienced alternative and complimentary therapies. The weird stuff has done more for me than western medicine ever did. I haven't seen a western medical doctor for 11 years and have never felt better.

Many people who provide alternative and complimentary therapies do so because they've received benefits from them that western medicine was not able to provide. In fact, every ACM practitioner that I know was faced with a life-threatening condition that western medicine was not able to treat adequately enough to suit them -- either there was no "cure" or the treatment was worse than the imbalance.

They, in turn, use the knowledge they gained during their treatment to help others. Believe me -- the folks I know aren't in it for the money. They put their heart and soul (and sometimes homes) on the line in order to help others.

This is actually more than you may have wanted to know, but a simple "yes" didn't seem sufficient today.

Supermodel is right. I would go with her.

For prevention and health, go the alternative route and for
major medical stuff, do western.

The good thing about alternative medicines is they
- usually have no side effects
- you might already be using some at home(spices, herbs)
- the do not react with other drugs (e.g garlic and oregano)
- it is near impossible to overdose (too much aloe) and if you do
- since it is (natural), your body has a better chance of handling
the problem before you even realize it

Good luck

This mainly depends on what you are trying to treat. Allopathic medicine is very good for things that do require surgery for example. Chiropractors do excellent work on back, neck and joint problems. Herbalist have many effective remedies for some conditions. See Murray's Encyclopedia of Natural Medicine for a good discussion of this question.
