1337 aka 14 means LEET. as in Elite. Awesome. Superior. It's often used in pc online video games, for they have their own jargon. Often the chronic video game users / addicts use their jargon outside of the pc environment due to the fact that they're usually playing the mmorpgs or online multiplayer games so often, that it becomes a part of themselves, and their natural language.
