Or should I just get tickets a bit farther back to take in the whole spectacle better?

All are excellent! I had a "splatter row" seat and didn't get hit, but the people next to me are. Just go with what you can afford, and try to not sit too far back. It is the most AMAZING show, so the important thing is that you go!

I sat in about the middle of the theatre when I saw the show a few months ago. From what I could tell, the folks up front would have to do a lot of craning their necks around to see all of the action that takes place in the aisles, the balcony, etc.

Absolutely get splattered - and when they need an audience volunteer go mad to be the one they pick - you'll have a blast!!!
