If you went into a store and bought a drink for 1.97, and you have 5.03 to the clerk, how much change would you get back? This is driving me crazy because I know i'm right but my friend seems to think you'll get an even 3.00 which is WRONG!

Paying $5.03 for a $1.97 purchase would give you $3.06 in change. Paying $5.02 would give you $3.05, which at 3 ones and a nickel, would save getting back a penny. That's a bit more "even" than 3 ones, a nickel and penny (or 3 pennies if you paid $2 for the $1.97 purchase) but $3 is not do-able. If that's all you get back, you're being short-changed.

If you gave the clerk $5 even, you would get $3.03 back. Handing clerk $5.03 destroys the purpose as now you'll get back $3.06 back. Giving clerk the extra $.03 is reducing the $1.97 to $1.94.

Your friend is just adding the difference on the wrong end. . .and is rounding up BUT those 3¢ are owed TO you.

Your friend seems to be trying to reduce the # of pennies you are carrying around. You could give the clerk 5.02 to get a nickel instead of 3 pennies back. . .or give him the 7¢ to get back a dime. It's really just a rounding error.

There are states where you have 5% tax on food.
If you are in one of these states you have to calculate 5% tax on your 1.97 drink.
Your drink price becomes $2.06
If you have $5.03 then you will get back $2.97

If the state you're living doesn't have taxes on food you will get back $3.06

Why would you give a clerk 5.03 instead of 5.00 for a 1.97 charge?

The school systems are working very well I see.... I'd be glad to give her change.... lol

I always do this stuff to the cashiers because I hate getting small change.
You should've given $5.02 (to get rid of the pennies) and received $3.05 as a nickel is better than 5 pennies any day!

If you (or your friend) can't subtract 197 from 503 -- we have some serious problems with the education system.

The answer is $3.06

never mind weits (the cat) answer...dosen't appear to be much smarter then your friend. And why would you give the cashier 5.03? What kind of stupid math question is that?

your friend is wrong. You would get $3.06 back

in order to get an even $3.00 back you would have to spend $2.03

5.03 - 1.97 =

$3.06

And why would you give $5.03 to the clerk? Wouldn't $5.00 be easier?
