I haven't played any of them, but I'm pretty sure any 3-player version of chess suffers from a fatal flaw: Any time two of the players exchange a piece, the third player ends up ahead. Therefore the strategy would favor everyone hanging back and doing their utmost to never trade anything. That makes for a pretty lousy game.
