Download a small program called IrfanView that lets you resize image files easily. Here's their website: http://www.irfanview.com/ You can open the image with IrfanView, go to the Image menu > Resize/Resample, and enter the size you want it to be. If you don't want to stretch the image, make sure the Preserve Aspect Ratio box is checked.

Use a program like Paint Shop, Vueprint, Irfanview or Photoshop Elements if you've got that pre-installed. Those will allow you to resize the image and save it. Pixels are the dots that comprise the picture, just like on a TV screen. The fewer the pixels, the smaller the image, so the less space it takes up. Hope your avatar is a good one! :)

Right click on the file, then click on Resize Image, then just choose the size you want. If you don't get that option, then get Image Resizer PowerToy from Microsoft here:

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx

Scroll down and look in the blue right hand column. It's very small and it only installs that single context menu item. I use it all the time, because it so easy and fast, and you don't have to open any programs.

If you have a digital camera you probably got some free software that can do the resize for you. If no CD then you need to buy Adobe Photoshop or similar.

If this is all you need to do, go to a friends house, go to Kinko's, stand on a college campus and beg. It's not worth spending $50 on software to do one resize!

The simplest way of doing this is using Microsoft Paint, go to Image/Stretch-Skew and re-define the size by percentage, try saving it then having a look through My Computer at the size of the file until you're happy. Will take you a minute or so. Good luck!

open it in paint.(paint is a program in windows)
Enter 10, 10 in the boxes in front of Stretch
Click OK
Save file as jpeg with a new name, so that it does not overwrite your old image. Now look at the kilobytes in it. If It is OK. If not Open the original image in paint again, and give a higher or lower value as you may require.

Pixels are a measurement, like cm's or inches. The size of the file will depend on colour (8 bit, 16,bit & 24bit) and the amount of compression. Use Photoshop
