My 15-year-old sister walks on her toes when she's at home or whenever she's barefoot. Now, the thing is, she's almost ALWAYS barefoot, so she's almost ALWAYS on tiptoe. (But when she wears shoes, she walks normally enough.)

Why does she walk that way? I asked her about it, and she said it's comfortable. Strange. She's done it as long as I can remember. I'm fine with it, it's even a bit cute. I'm just curious.

I've looked into the matter and all I can see is info about mental disorders. Now, my sister does NOT have a mental disorder. She's extremely intelligent and very sociable too, and apart from the little tiptoe quirk, she's pretty much a normal girl. (In fact, the tiptoe quirk might be somewhat normal too... I don't know, I don't walk barefoot and I'm not really a typical girl, so you tell me =p)

My daughter was doing the same thing, and the problem was her Achilles tendon was to tight. Her doctor & phyical therapist had us do stretching exercises with her feet. Does her feet hurt or bother her after she has been wearing shoes? If so, then this might be the problem.
I know that in young children this can be a sign of autisum, but as your sister is 15, I don't think this would apply, but there are some forms of "high-functioning" autisum such as Aspergers Syndrome, that can occur.
It might be a good idea to discuss this with your family doctor to check and make sure its just a "quirk" as you put it and not a problem.
I hope this was helpful to you. :)

It might be more comfortable if her calf muscles or perhaps her plantar fascia (bottom of her foot) are too tight or short. This used to happen all the time when women wore high heels all day. Some leg muscles shortened and it left the women in pain if they tried to walk in flats. Ask her if walking normally makes her legs or feet hurt or ache over time. She may need some simple stretching exercises that a physical therapist could show her.

My youngest son hated to walk, period, his entire life and made me carry him until he was about three. It wasn't until he was in his teens and couldn't run to keep up with the wrestling team's training sessions that a doctor realized his ankle hadn't formed quite right, and he'd been in pain his whole life whenever he walked a lot. Since he never had experienced anything different, he never talked about it or knew that wasn't normal. He always had an unusual walk, so that should have been the clue.

I always walk that way too. More so on the kitchen vinyl. I don't want to get the floor any dirtier, nor do I want to get my feet any dirtier. I never even thought about it until you asked. I think some ppl just have certain little quirks. It means nothing.

My nephew is the same way, the only thing that may be a concern is if her tendons in her heal and ankle are shortened from her always walking on tip toe...but it sounds like she is walking "normal" in shoes so that doesn't seem to be a problem.

I wouldn't worry about it unless it is causeing her discomfort when walking "normal"

I do it as well, but I have plantar fasciitis in both feet and I tore my right achilles tendon about 6 years ago. Been doing it ever since. I have special inserts for when I do wear shoes (only when I go out, and that is rare too)

She could have a problem with her feet. you never know.

Don't worry, she just got used to it. It might first started all in her head that she will get her feet dirty then it became just a habbit. If you are worried about Achilles Tendon they do it even with shoes on.

lot's of people walk in such manner as a result of fear of steping on something,to some it may be phobia, some simply develop the habit growing up because they tend to keep their balance easily been on their toes.nothing is wrong with it infact she may turn out to be a good sprinter, because they are able to distribute their body weight

My husband does this also. I think it something that some people do when they start learning how to walk. Then they get used to walking that way.
