Most high schools generally play the kind of music that the majority of the student body wants. My experience is that they primarily play rap, and kids jump and spin, and it really does not look like "dancing" to me.
Typically, at least one song is a slow "dance" song where two people have an opportunity to do some couple dancing. Understand Aaron, that there are leaders and followers in couple dances. And traditionally the male is the leader and the female is the follower. If you are seeking advice on where to learn, then do a little research on the Internet, local papers, or phone book for a studio or class near you. Consider the local recreation department, local community colleges. Some nightclubs offer group lessons free or at very low admission prices. This includes lessons for folks under 21 years of age.
Since you are going to a HS dance, and figuring that at least one song will be a slow dance, focus on simple box-step moves. Perhaps you have time to learn the fox trot. It will require that you and the partner PRACTICE! But remember, the leader, actually leads (even if it is just for one dance) So if you are the leader, do twice as much practice as the follower to help you get started.

The one kind of dancing that goes with the most kind of musics is swing dancing. That said, you probably should find out what kind of music will be played at your high schools homecoming dance ahead of time and focus on learning the dances for that kind of music.
You don't have to learn every possible move for that music, but you do need a few moves for each dance style. Confident and accurate execution of four moves in each dance style is more important than learning thirty moves in each style.

well depending on who you go with is one of the most important aspects of deciding what dance to do. And most likely you will just start doing what everybody else is doing because that what happens. and there isn't one specific dance to learn or any in that case you just go with the flow.. but one you need to learn is to "Grind" it's where you move your body on the other person.

Feel the groove to pop music. In more rappish songs(like Promiscuous or Give It Up To Me) watch the other girls and dance like them. It may be kind of sluttish but you won't be laughed at. They usually do it in groups. For slow dancing, stay out of it if you aren't asked.

it depends: are you going with a date? with a group of friends?
if you're going with a date, you need to atleast learn to put your arms around her and rock back and forth, thats what most guys do when slow dancing. if you want to get fancy, spin her around or dip her...but not too low, especially if she's got a dress.
if you're going with a group of friends, just move to the beat...subtly. If you're dancing like an idiot, its a lot of fun, ive done it, but nobody will really want to approach you(i mean, of the opposite sex...), so if you're trying to get a girl to notice you, then just wear something really nice to show you care, and move around cooly.
