Which out of the two you need -
1. Make the file size small so that the overall size of the word file doesn't become too heavy.
2. Make the size of the picture on the page smaller so that more can fit on one page / pictures and text can fit in
For 1, open the file in photoshop / microsoft photo editor and reduce image size. If you don't have any, right click on the file and click on send to mail recipient. It will ask you whether to make file size smaller. Then save the file from the window that opens to your desktop (or other folder)
For 2, if the picture size is more than the size of the page, then zoom out using the view file menu. click on the picture, then you will see picture corners appear, then move your mouse cursor on one corner so that it changes to an arrow pointing both sides. Click & hold and pull inside to reduce the picture size.

Insert the picture into Word
Click on the picture and you should get an outline around the picture
Grab that outline and drag it in to make the picture the size you want.
Or
Start > All Programs > Accessories > Paint
Start the Paint program
File > Open the picture you want to resize
Click on Stretch or Skrew
Change the horizontal and vertical stretch of the picture to the size you want.
Save the file as a File Type jpeg under a new name (so as not to overwritten the original file)

You can make the image smaller, reduce the # of colors in the file, adjust the resolution, crop out un-needed sections.
The best way for me is to go to file > save for web. Then use the the 4-up option. Play with the settings on the right side of the window. Just mess with the options until you find settings that work well for you.
One thing to keep in mind is that more colors, bigger size and resolution all increase file size.
Now, if you're actually talking about "RESIZING"...
Then the best way I know is to go to Image > Image Size > Then just adjust the document size by changing either the pixel width and height, the document size width and height, or the resolution. :)

Once you drag & drop the pic on ther Word page, just select it and adjust the pics to the size you require using the handles, those little squares around the pic..
If you want to make the pics actually smaller (the file itself, not just in Word, but the actual file size in Kbs), right click on the file, then Resize Picture, and choose the size you want.
If you don't get Resize PIctures in your context menu, download Image Resizer PowerToy from Microsoft here (look for it in the right hand column, scroll down till you find it)

You can resize the pictures once they have been inserted in the word document. To insert you must do the following:
click on "insert"
click on "picture" and select "from file"
browse to the picture and click OK
next single click on the picture to highlight it and you will see a border with squares on the corners and sides.
Click and hold on one of the squares and drag to the appropriate size.
Hope this helps.

Open your pic with Microsoft Photo Editor, go to Image, Resize and resize it to the size you want. Then go to File and "Save as" with new name.
Good luck.
