A lot of animals either can grow multiple sets of teeth (e.g., sharks and crocodiles), or have teeth that grow continuously and wear away at the ends (primarily rodents). So for these animals, the health of a particular tooth is irrelevant. A lot of animals lack teeth entirely (e.g., tortoises and turtles). The others have probably just evolved to live on diets that do not tend to harbor damaging bacteria.

contrary to popular belief animals suffer from the same array of dental ailments that humans do...however many of them have developed immunities that make them more resistant to wear and infection. However when animals get old...they start losing their teeth...when animals lose their teeth they either choke from not being able to chew or die of starvation.

Good question, I guess they don't have to impress their mates by having a beautiful smile so it really doesn't matter.
