Relatively simple response is to say that the human race is interested in something quick and easy for the most part (over generalization I know!) but to put the time and thought into answering all the questions and know that what you think and write is a reflection of you is often intimidating to some people and lets face it a funny answer is better then no answer at all especially when the question is silly or immature. Remember you are opening a question up for public response and opinion and sooner or later there is a response that you are looking for but you do have to get through the rotten submissions and the humorous anecdotes before you locate it. Hang in there there are people who do answer the serious questions as well, although it may feel as though they are few and far between. GOOD LUCK!

I wonder how [whether] you know this. Have you looked into Resolved stupid questions and intelligent questions, and seen that the stupid ones get more respondents? Or look at each user's list of answers and tallied which are to stupid v. intelligent questions?
ALL of them?
I've seen intelligent questions get lots of answers, many of them thoughtful.
Do you ask because you asked what you thought was an intelligent question and you got no or few answers? If that's it, no one can possibly see every question, and I think sometimes there just aren't enough people either interested in or knowledgeable about a given topic who happen to be on the site and happen to see it.
Of course, it's easier to give answers that don't require much thought. Some people are just trying to get lots of points.
Also, a lot of people are here for entertainment or because they are bored, not for serious exchange of information.
There are a lot of people who simply don't know that much. I think it's just as well when those who don't know and don't want to think about it simply don't answer. (I've seen a lot of "answers" that simply say "dunno" -- then why did you click Answer This Question, ya freak?!)
What, really, is the point to your question?
Are you really asking about dumb answers to intelligent questions?
Notice, your question can be answered either with or without much thought.
;-)
PS to the answer just above mine: No, when you ask vague questions, no one knows what the h*ll you're asking. Without context people have to guess what you mean (which isn't the same as "thinking" in any kind of serious way. If I know what a person is asking, then I can think through to an answer.
(I HATE all of the vague questions -- it means the person doesn't care enough to figure out what they want to know, and provide the information others need to understand the situation -- if you want help, give people what they need to be able to help.)

Somehow the stupid questions are the easiest to answer. No thinking required... no references required... no serious thoughts... just your immediate impression on the question. It's even tricky sometimes. The asker's intention could sometimes be, let's say, to see how many respondents get the humor in the stupid question. Others don't see it so they rather respond with rude or condescending answers... which may rather cause the asker to think, "these people who think they're intelligent look rather stupid for not seeing the humor in the question." Did I make any sense to you?

Some people only like to answer yes or no, black or white, this or that type of questions where it deals in absolutes.
I don't, I prefer the most open-ended type of questions and when I ask questions I make them as vague as possible.
Some people freak and and think they don't have enough information to answer the question. Some people like to have all the thinking done for them in advance, I guess.

Ask away Ma'am. I love real legitimate questions. Questions by teenagers (which I'm sure to them are not stupid) are some of my favorites though. Political, religious, or race baiting questions aren't, but I tend to answer them appropriately.
I'm always on the hunt for "good" questions. Yours falls into this category...
