Hey, I am French, I spent 5 years there, cool place really.

Here's my advice :

For the map, buy a "Ponchet Plan-Net, Paris" it's the best and you will find it in any newsagent, inside you'll find maps of each one of the 20 "arrrondissements"(burroughs) of the city, map of busses, metro and suburban trains.

Some place to see:

The American Church in Paris ( http://www.acparis.org/ ) is a nice place to hang about, you'll find there the English version of Time-Out for Paris ( http://www.timeout.com/paris/ ) .

In the district you are going to stay you can go to : shakespeare & co ( http://www.shakespeareco.org/ ) also a place with lots of american and british expatriates, and just a few yards away is the legendary Harry's Bar ( http://www.worldsbestbars.com/city/paris/harrys-bar-paris.htm ).

You can find all your favorites magazines and newspapers at WH Smith ( http://www.whsmith.fr/ ).

Enjoy your stay !

Go to AAA. If you're a member, they are free. If not, it's a few bucks and they have all kinds of maps for any place in the world.

Use http://www.mappy.fr/ and type in the address on the right hand part.then OK
When the map appears you can zoom in and out to get your bearings to prominent landmarks such as metro stations etc

In the airport there should be a tourist info stand with that kind of stuff. Maybe you should ask your travel agent or do a google on the places you plan on visiting.
