That's the letter 'm'. The 'm' stands for the name of the man that created M&M. Forrest Mars (the son of the man that start Mars, Inc - the company that brought you Snickers bar) created M&M's when he realized chocolate pellets melt in hot weather and causes a mess.
He branded it with the 'm' so that when the candy left the packaging ppl could distiniguish it from other knockoffs.
