Sounds like a bad power supply. Unfortunately, the power supplies for Compaq are unique to their system board and cases, so you probably will not be able to just go out to a store and buy a generic replacement. (Why I do not owe a Compaq - too many incompatiable parts). You will have to take it to a professional and they will have to order the replacement from Compaq.

Compaq computers overheat...they have an auto shut off to protect it...when it's cooled down, it will let you boot your pc.
It would be a good idea to shut down and unplug, take the cover off and use a can of "air duster" and spray out the dust (never use a vacuum)...dust build-up on fans and vents will make your pc overheat...when a pc overheats it will fry your motherboard.
