That's certainly true if the extent of your music exposure is what's the latest on TRL. What I have found is that there is a very talented local scene at least here in the SF Bay Area. Singers that sing, write their own music, AND play their own instruments. There is a lot of talent out there, and a lot of the music movements start in the underground scene (much like punk music started for example).

In all fairness, the older singers were in movies too.
See Elvis and Sinatra. By no means am I comparing the "singers" of today with those two. But I think the entertainment media is fair game. Jamie Foxx, good singer and actor. It's when you go from acting to singing that is usually the problem.

The few "real" singers are far and in between. They are marketing singers now for sex appeal rather than their singing abilty. I think that someone looks at some of them, sees a way to make money in more than one field with them (i.e. acting, modeling, dance, etc.) and put them on the market first as a singer. I think maybe because the music industry gets fans faster than other industies, they put them their first and then move them on to other areas. One thing is for sure, they really don't make them like they used to!!!

Ray Charles. Frank Sinatra. Johnny Cash.
Yep, your right! All the mainstream singers seriously suck. All the good mainstreams are in the past.
I still like NIN though. Atleast Trent Reznor makes everything from ground up. That's just naming one out of the many who don't have the spotlight and are much more talented than -oh say- Paris Hilton.

This trend is upsetting, I agree. however, there are some awesome singer/songwriters out there like Dave Matthews, James Blunt, John Mayer and Jack Johnson. Try looking them up and you'll realize that there still is talent in the world.

Check out KT Tunstall, album Eye of the Telescope
She writes all her own songs, writes all her own music, plays all the instruments on the album and does all her own backup. I'm not talking about professionals mixing for her, she did it all herself.

ah the good ol days. Im a 70's freak and a guitarist. I yearn for the days of Zep, and Frampton, etc. They composed, performed their own stuff. Today there is barely a scene left. So sad.
