You need to either download the Linux .iso images and burn them to CD/DVD (whichever you choose to download and can burn to) or purchase the CDs/DVDs.

Then get information (manufacturer, model, part number, etc.) on all the major computer parts (sound card, video card, network card, etc.) as you may need to hunt around for the drivers. Personally I recommend at least downloading any network card drivers and having that on CD in case your distro doesn't have all the right drivers. Google and http://www.linuxquestions.org/ are your friends in this.

Once you have all that you just need to boot from the first Linux CD/DVD and enjoy. I personally prefer Fedora Core as my distro, but for the most part they are all pretty good.

I would go for ubuntu too. Do be aware that installing linux can require some knowledge you may not have already such as setting up boot loaders and disk partitiions. The first time I installed linux in 1998 I killed the widows install.

You should just be able to boot from the CD that Linux is on, then it will start the install process. It really depends on what version of Linux you have. I suggest using Ubuntu because it is very easy to install and use.

I second the Ubuntu suggestion; they are prepackaged to eliminate clustering installation choices that other brands impose upfront. The only tricky part is where in hard drive to install it, always choose "manual" to do the option yourself. Is this machine prepped for another OS to be installed?
