Instruments similar to what we know as the guitar have been popular for at least 5,000 years.

The guitar appears to be derived from earlier instruments known in ancient central Asia as the cithara.

Instruments very similar to the guitar appear in ancient carvings and statues recovered from the old Iranian capitol of Susa.

The modern word, guitar, was adopted into English from Spanish guitarra, derived from earlier Greek word kithara.

The earliest extant (still in existence) six string guitar was built in 1779 by Gaetano Vinaccia in Naples, Italy.

Modern dimensions of the classical instrument were established by Antonio Torres Jurado working in Seville in the 1850's.

The electric guitar was patented by George Beauchamp in 1936.

The guitar was invented by a poor plucker named Nora Tit, who could not afford a bow for her violin.
Oh, pluck it she thought and she did!
It wasn't long before people noticed her plucking away.
Pluckin' hell the people thought, that looks like fun, and the guitar was born.
Pieces of Jimi Hendix's guitar sold for thousands recently,
now there was a well plucked instrament.

probably originated in Spain early in the 16th century, deriving from the guitarra latina, a late-medieval instrument with a waisted body and four strings.
