The mordant reacts with the dye used in staining, to create a colored precipitate. It is the precipitate, not the dye itself, that can be observed after the excess dye is washed away.

As in the Gram stain? Iodine is used as a mordant to bind the stain into the cell wall, so as not to be washed out during the alcohol wash.

mordant acts as fixative.that is the cell's structure is maintained as such so that it might be viewed correctly without any shrinkage of the cell.and also to fix the dye added . (i m not clear)
