in buffy where/how does her "sister" dawn come from??

I know Dawn is a memory, but when Buffy said Dawn was made from her. (Episode: The Gift) Wouldn't the process in making Dawn from Buffy be also a implanted memory? Hence, Dawn isn't really part of Buffy then. I mean how did the monks get a hold of Buffy's blood, etc to make Dawn?

The monks had a hidden key that could open the way for the evil god Glorificus (Glory) to open a portal to a hell dimension where she once ruled. The problem was that if she ever managed to do this, our world would end. The monks were getting desperate as Glory was getting closer to finding the monks who had the key. They decided that they would transform the key and send it to someone they thought would be able to protect it. They decided to turn the key into human form. This was Dawn. The person they thought would be strong enough to protect the key was Buffy. So that no one would say "hey where did you come from?" the monks also cast a magic spell that meant everyone would only ever know Dawn as Buffy's sister, and have memories of her etc.

Dawn is an interdimesional energy portal in the form of a young human female. Now fully human. Dawn Summers, was supposedly born to Hank and Joyce Summers in 1987 in Los Angeles (Buffy's parents). Dawn's immediate family were unaware of her mystical origin for a while as they had been imbued with artificial memories of her as Buffy's younger sister. Only those "outside reality," such as mental patients, see Dawn's true nature.

Finalfrontier has the right answer. She was originally the Key, a green energy, which the monks used a spell on to make her into human form. They based her on Buffy's DNA, to make her into a sister whom the Slayer would of course protect. The spell which created Dawn also altered everyone's memories, including her own, to believe she had always been there.

ohh lol this got me aswell, it took some time before i got this but dawn's not actually real, shes a memory put into everones head by monks to make buffy think she had a sister so she would protect her, but actually dawn is a secret magical key that can open the gateways through reality, and with buffy protecting it thinking its her sister, the gateways to evil are safe from being opened, you will find out as you watch more episodes why dawn suddenly appears, dont worry it confused me too ! x

Harmony who was a evil "God" was looking for the "Key" so the monks who protected the "Key" created Dawn, inplanted a false memory into everyone's brain that said Dawn was Buffy's lil' sis, The "Key" to opened up another dimension, letting loose a whole heap of evil upon the world.
