Buy a wireless router. Instructions are on the box.

You need a wireless router. (Around $50 at Best Buy or Walmart)

You hook the broadband modem into the back of the router (There will be one port on it usually labeled "download" where you plug in the modem. Check the documentation if not sure which one.)
Run another cable from the router to your desktop
Run the CD that will come with the router to set up a network between the desktop and the router (It is easy, the CD will walk you through it)
Once the desktop is working and connecting to the Internet, boot up your laptop
Go into the control panel and click the wireless network wizard icon and it will connect your laptop to the network
Done...

I bought a netgear wireless router. It came with an installation disk. When I put in the disk, it showed me step by step what to do, with pictures and diagrams. Then, when I had it plugged in right, I hit NEXT and the thing actually set up the network on my computer for me! All I had to do was follow the instructions on the installation disk. I don't know if other routers come with similar set up disks, but mine made set up easy.
