Surround the egg with packing foam (those s-shaped blocks), wrapping foam (stuff supermarkets use to wrap pears), or crumpled paper. Bubble wrap may also be okay, but it depends on the quality of the wrap. Then bag the glob tightly into a standalone piece before stuffing into the jar. Make sure the egg is in the centre.
You could also wrap the outside of the jar with sponges or wrapping foam + tape to make the jar itself break less easily.
-----
You know, you could also go to your local hardware store and buy a tube of silicone-based caulking (e.g. mono ultra, the the clear colourless one) or builder's foam (the foamy looking stuff under your window moldings).
Just make a "seat" for the egg at the bottom of the jar, place the egg in the centre of the jar, and fill up the rest of the jar with the same stuff.
The caulking is a shock-absorbing rubber material, feels like a rubber ball.
A solid glass block chips, but a glass bottle shatters.

An intelligent guess only but suspect might work
pack the egg centrally in the jar with the pointed end of the egg top side in a vertical position and pack with dry sand.
hope this helps
