Presumably you mean geologically since Equador has arbitrary boundaries. Geologically, it formed in the same manner that California formed. The South American plate, (didn't bother to look up the actual name) pushed into the Pacific plate (again not sure which one) and this resulted in the Andes Mountains and accumlation of island arcs etc.
