I just decided last night to start donating a small amount to them each month. I signed up online. Now I'm starting to realize their website is crappy. Does anyone else donate? Do you hate their website? Do you get anything cool for becoming a monthly donor? Just wondering.

I love animals and want to help out as much as I can.

I just realized I sounded shallow by asking if you get anything for donating.. I really don't care about that, I just was wondering because I thought the site had said something. I'm just happy to be helping a kitty or puppy or any animal.

Nope, sure don't. I think either volunteering or donating to your local shelter would be better. You can actually SEE the benefits of what you're doing/giving.

Whenever possible, I donate locally for causes rather than to the national offices.

The problem with most national programs is that a lot of the money given gets used for salaries, advertising, etc. with comparatively small amounts being used to do the real work.

Donating locally tends to offer more benefits to you- they get to know you, they often offer some sort of benefits beyond an e-mail newsletter, and more of the money goes to the real work.

In other words, you'll probably save more animals with $5 towards your local shelter than you will with $50 to a national program- so just imagine what your local shelter could do with the full $50!

I don't donate to the ASPCA, but I do sign petitions and I will write to my congressman when they bring an issue to my attention.

For donations, I'd give that money to a local shelter. It will go directly to the pups, dogs, kittens and cats at that shelter instead of going into the paychecks of the executives of a big organization. I hate saying that about the ASPCA, but the money would do so much better staying at small local shelters.

You might want to consider donating to Best Friends sanctuary in Kenab, Utah. They are leaders in sponsoring the move for "no-kill" shelters across the US. They harbor over 1500 cats, dogs, bunnies etc. at their sanctuary. Last year they rescued over 1500 bunnies from an unfortunate situation and found homes for them all.

Their website is: bestfriends.org. They put out a very attractive magazine quarterly which has all the good news about animal rescue throughout the world.

to be quite honest with you, the money that you donate to the aspce does not come close to where you live. the shelters in your area never see a penny of that money, ( it all goes to the main headquarters and most of it doesnt even go directly to the animals) so if you really want to help out, go buy a couple of bags of dog food a month or even one a week and drop it off. Or, volunteer to help with the chores.. One reason shelters put animals to sleep is because they cant afford to feed them and to pay someone to walk them and clean up after them. They stand to lose more money by keeping them alive. I am not trying to be cruel, but that is how it works. If you REALLY want to make a difference, volunteer or donate directly to the shelter of your choice, or simply drop off some food for them.

I regularly donate items as well as one day a week to the ASPCA! I take in dog and cat toys as well as food and treats for them. Then once a week I volunteer to take each animal outside for their walk and evercise each week! Its sooo much fun and makes u feel so good to be helping the animals!

I volunteer instead. My local one is great. The website is user friendly, but I don't know if they send anything to their donors.
Maybe find a local branch and see what they have going for them.
