I do not know guest houses. The cheapest way I know is Hansje Brinker. THere ad says" known as 'The Most XXXclusive Budget Hotel' Here you will find: NO PARKING, NO SAUNA, NO BELLBOYS, NO AIR CONDITIONING, NO MINIBARS, NO ROOM SERVICE....but you will find clean basic rooms in central Amsterdam...No Drugs allowed!"

Stayed in the Internation Hotel Amsterdam a couple of years ago, great location in the centre of town and really cheap as well.

Flying Pig hostels are v good - there are 2 in amsterdam - really cheap with bar and free internet. One is downtown, and can't remember the location of the other one, but google the name and it'll come up; think you can book online too.
