You can, but you Should be running Windows XP Professional SP2. That has Internet Information Services(IIS) built in. And it is a new version than Windows 2000 Server. (IIS 5.0 in 2000 VS. IIS 5.1 Win XP Pro). Just in case you dont know, the PHP that was mentiond before, is Personial Home Page, and Apache is a Linux webserver. That is a LOT more complex than running a windows server, you NEED to learn Unix/Linux-Specific shell/batch commands, and Linux can be verry hard to get your hardware to work. Actually for just a simple site, it can be a true nightmare for the advrage user. I say get Windows XP Pro and a book on IIS and website devolopment such as HTML/ XML.

It's not necessarily a conversion. If you decide stay with Windows XP you can download http server software (aka web server software) on an XP machine.

Apache, IIS and Tomcat are few that come to mind but there are others.

Here's a list of them. Not all of them will work on a Windows XP machine.

Yes of course, but of course the performance is likely a developer testing platform, even Windows 95 is known to have been Web developer testbed some time ago..

I use XP to run Apache-Tomcat (Web, JSP/Java Servlet) all the time.

The person that wrote, "Depend on your web language
If ASP, using IIS with WindowsXP; If JSP use Tomcat; If PHP, use apache is the best way." is accurate. Although more options could be mentioned, the apache route is probably your best bet.
Check into apache when you get a chance. I left you a link to their website. (see below)
