Is a passport required to return to the US by car? Or is that law changing next year?

Passports required begining Jan 1st 2007.

LAW CURRENTLY DOES REQUIRE proof of citizenship, this could be a birth cert (certified or original) even for minors. There isn't an issue in getting into Canada, but you may have issues getting back into the States. This applies to people driving into Canada as welll.

Yah it takes effect starting next year, all you need now is a drivers license/state id and a birth certificate.

Just a valid id is not enough, you need to prove citizenship via birth certificate, passport etc.
