Average time to conceive - 8 months.
Smoking can effect sperm production.
Also, coming off the pill can mess up your cycle for a while, i.e you might not have ovulated yet since getting off them.
I recommend reading Taking Charge of Your Fertiliy by Toni Weschler (www.tcoyf.com) this book is probably available at your local library.

Everyone's cycle is different. There is a myth that woman ovulate 14 days after their period begins...but that is only an AVERAGE and each month can be different. The other thing is that sperm can live inside you for up to 5 days.... so if you are having a shortened cycle one month and you have sex right after your period and you ovulate earlier than day 14 than yes, there is a chance of getting pregnant. They only way to know is to know exactly when you ovulate. There are several ways to know and some are more effective than others. Some can only predict before ovulation happens and some can only predict that is has already happened. The absolute best info I can give you is to go read a book called Taking Charge of your fertility by Toni Weschler. It will help you understand your body and all the myths about it. It will help you time when you are ovulating and the best times to conceive – or not! . It's about knowing your body and knowing when you are fertile or not.
My husband and I tried for 1 year and had no luck....the first month that I began using the book I realized that my timing was WRONG!. We got pregnant that very first month and I am now due Feb 2, 2007. You can pick and choose what you do with your info. Good luck and don't listen the all the myths! Even if you don't get into charting and everything....it will help you in so many ways!

That's great that you are taking healthy steps prior to getting pregnant. Your b/f should do the same by trying to quit smoking. Although I don't think smoking effects the sperm. My husband smokes and we have a daughter. He also has two daughters from a previous marriage. It's just better that he doesn't smoke in the house or around you and eventually - the baby.
I would start taking prenatal vitamins as well, but most importantly you need to find out if/when you are ovulating. The easiest way is to use an ovulation kit. You can try having sex every other day, but if your b/f is working different shifts, it might put more stress on both of you. Having sex around your ovulation time is your best chance of conceiving. If you find you aren't ovulating, go to your OBGYN. There are meds that can help you ovulate.
Good luck.

Well, #1, Are you taking prenatal vitamins? If not you need to start. It is HIGHLY recommended that you start taking them 3-6 months before trying to conceive. #2, After being on any kind of hormonl birth control for that long it could take up to 2 years to become pregnant. #3, Your b/f needs to quit smoking. Babies can breath in particles from cigarettes when being held by someone that smokes. My son was a preemie and the nurses at Children's Hospital told me that even if the person is not smoking around the baby/child they can still have an affect on them. And it is a complete MYTH that smoking affects sperm count...unless it is laced with something else. My mom and dad were both heavy smokers and I am the youngest of 4 kids!

f you plan to have a baby, how soon after stopping the birth control pill can you conceive?
One of the advantages of the birth control pill is that it's quickly reversible. After you stop taking the pill, you may have only a two-week delay before you ovulate again. Your period would follow about four to six weeks after you take the last pill.
Once ovulation resumes, you can become pregnant. If this happens during your first cycle off the pill, you may not have a period at all. However, although possible, this scenario isn't likely. You have only a one in five chance of becoming pregnant during your first cycle trying to conceive. And everyone is different. It could take you more then a year to become pregnant.

I just read an article that said it can take a normal woman a year to get pregnant. It took my best friend a year to get pregnant once she got off the pill. Also, your odds increase every month that you try. You have a 10% chance your 1st month, a 20% chance your 2nd month, and so on. Don't worry about anything until you've been trying for at least a year. Your bf may want to lay off the smoking, though. And don't overdo the exercising. Believe it or not, it's easier to get pregnant when you have some body fat on you, I don't mean you have to be fat, just not real thin.

Coming off the pill is sort of a crap shoot. Some women get pregnant right away, some women cycle normally but take a few months for their cervix to start producing fertile mucous again, and some women take a year or so to cycle normally and conceive.
Your boyfriend really should try to stop smoking. Obviously, it's healthier for him, plus is can depress his sperm count and if you do conceive, it's much better for the baby for you not to be exposed to secondhand smoke.
I strongly recommend reading "Taking Charge of Your Fertility" by Toni Weschler for information about charting your fertility signs and maximizing your chances of conception.

The best stepped in trying to conceive is to get married first. If you even love the idea of a baby you will offer that baby the best start in life with a two parent home where the parents are committed in marriage. What is the hurry? There is a lot more then health that you need to consider?
*** Are you both financially ready for children?
****What are your views on daycare and is handing your baby over to daycare at 12 weeks old ...ok with the both of you?
****Is this man committed in marriage or is he going to walk when he decides he wants to move on?
****What are your values and morals do they match?
*** How do you both feel about divorce? Obviously marriage isn't a priority

You should be off the pill for 3 months before trying to conceive. Start charting your cycle. Find out when you ovulate...that is the good time to try. Make sure that you are taking folic acid every day.

Cins, to get pregnant you must have sex on a day that your eggs are being released.
After the 3rd day from the day that menses started put a thermometer into your mouth and check your body temperature every morning before you start turning in bed. The best time is at about 4 a.m. Maintain a chart. You will find that on one day the body temperature drops from 1/2 degree to one degree. This is the day that your eggs are being released. If you want to get pregnant this is the day that you must have sex. Tell your husband to ejaculate on his inward thrust so that the sperms will shoot deep inside.
After having sex you must stay in bed for about 30 mins with your knees bent up with a pillow under your buttocks so that the sperms will not pour out - to enable them to travel up.
Get your husband to save his sperms in the testacles for at least 3 days before sex to enable them to mature well to do their job.
