I asked my dad that very question when I was knee high to a grass hopper. He told me they drop out of the sky when it storms. I thought this was a stupid reply, but not so as fish caught up in hurricanes and bad tropical storms have been found swimming in colder climes. So it is not beyond the realms of possibility that this may well be the case. Though I am sure some one will provide you with the correct answer.

Keep on asking questions like this one as that is how we learn.

Good luck

Most fish in the aquarium industry come from wild caught locations. This can include indonesia, south america, africa, china and many other locations. The captive bred specimens generally come from china, indonesia (thailand, singapore), and the US (florida, and california). Most marine fish are wild caught, in which the most common method of capturing them is to use cyanide to stun them, which in turn bleaches and kills the reefs they come from.
