A freind of mine did the same thing...although it was back in 1995...anyways I was surprised at how much stuff he was taking....all the furniture, even toilet and electrical circuit breaker boxes and tons of stuff in his 20 foot container...at that time, it cost $2800 for shipment. He owned the container...he arrived before the container did and had to bribe some customs official about $500 to leave his stuff alone and not inspect the belongings..

He bought a used container here in canada for $1200. He later sold it in the Philippines for about $2000.

The cost of transport of the container from the dock in Davao, Mindanao to his place in Butuan was another $400...a real bargain.

He contacted a shipping company to do the transport.

If you do not have a 13-G visa, you will pay customs tax on each item. The customs official will place a tax on it that exceeds the real value. Then to get it processed in less that 6 months you will pay hundreds or thousands of dollars in bribes. Add these costs to the shipping costs and you are probably better off giving the stuff to Goodwill. If you bring nice things to the Islands, they will probably be stolen fairly quickly after you get them out of customs.

It would be cheaper to rent one if you are in the pacific coast. You can contact a shipper / broker and or the major shippings lines such as OOCL, APL (american president lines) etc.. 2,500-3,500 usd for a 20 footer.

It will be cheaper if you ship your tools through FOREX or other door-to-door services. You can even ship your refrigerator through them. PLus, it will save you a lot of hassle in dealing with the local Custom Agents. CEBU port is notorious for asking grease money.

Personally, I wouldn't go to Cebu City with another woman.

Um.... tools and household items? I think the smallest container is 20'. If you have A LOT of tools this may be worth your while.

Contact freight forwarders, they can help. DHL Danzas and Schenker are two that I've worked with before.

I'm not sure what your "household items" entail, but typically it's cheaper to ship anything less than 200lbs via air vs ocean. I do mean air via a freight forwarder--not FedEx or DHL, their rates tend to be higher for air freight..
