Reading makes you informed, knowledgeable, so then you can make good decisions because you have good information to base it on. Reading gives you a great vocabulary, so you can then speak more in depth on something because you then have the words to do so. Reading matures you for it exposes you to a vast amount of different ideas, ideas you would probably never hear of in your neighborhood. And reading helps people of other cultures relate and understand each other, thus giving peace a chance. We've had religion since the beginning of time, and yet it never gave us peace, It actually divides us. Education is the solution, I believe.

I think that knowledge and intelligence and 2 different things. The way you choose to use the information or knowledge you have gathered throughout the years, would define how smart you are, you know? And the knowledge itself is just stuff we learn along the way. So reading books would definitely increase your knowledge of things, and the ones you find really interestin will get you thinkin about things, you otherwise may not have thought of. (But thats the same with movies or music, or anythin really that catches your attention.) But this is just my opinion, anyway. :)

It's a lie. Ignore it. Just read because it's fun. Read because reading can show you places, and introduce you to people that you would otherwise never know. Reading can crack open your world and dump new ideas and thoughts and dreams into it, causing your world to expand, even explode! Reading isn't about smart at all, it's about joy. Read for joy. Reading for smart is like drinking orange juice for vitamin C....

It gives you more knowledge. You have to be able to understand the knowledge with your own logic though. The more you understand, the more knowledge you can use. The more knowledge you can use, the smarter you are.
Also, reading is an activity which keeps your brain active. The more you read, the more exercise your brain gets, the easier it gets for your brain to process knowledge so that you can use it better.

That would depend on what you read, and how you define smart. Reading gives you knowledge. It gives you information you did not previously have.

Reading makes your brain work. Reading, puzzles, mazes, and such give your gray matter a workout.
As for reading making your smarter, it depends on what you read. You can peruse an adult magazine and you most likely won't get any smarter.
You read a historical novel, or the daily newspaper, you actually may get smarter.
