Yea, in Cambodia in 1975. We chose to ram a road block instead of letting Cam- rebels take us. It was a huge risk but I'm still here.

Yes,
When I started a new job as a contractor.

My client needed a connectivity software. I was tasked with the prototype, and researched what that they were using. Up until today I think my immediate supervisor thought I was just sketching something really simple; I was even questioned what I was working on.
Long story short, nobody saw the prototype until I did a demo the next week after the aforementioned incident, the risk was that if they didn't like it they were going to look for another person.... Turns out to be that they were so impressed with the accuracy, design and flow of the prototype they converted me to FTE.

Bottom Line:
The risk? Loosing my job by taking my chances against my immediate supervisor.
The paid off? Big bucks when I became FTE.

I do this all the time with work. I'm self-employed and make websites for a living. Sometimes we'll be too busy to want to take on any other projects or a project might sound too tedious or otherwise unattractive. So we'll set the price REALLY high to just take our chances. If they don't take it then, that's ok. We don't have to do the work. But if they do take it, "Yay!", we just made a ton of cash off the thing. Up until this point, everyone's gone with the high price!
