My 2nd grader has this as a homework question - he couldn't figure it out and I couldn't wither without using the computer. What do you think off the top of your head?

First of all, I think this is an absurd question for a 2nd grader. Most children this age aren't mentally ready for this sort of abstract concept.

It's important to learn WHERE to find answers when you have questions, that way you will never have to depend on others. If you are a parent, this is one of the best things you can do for your children. Teach them WHERE and HOW to find answers on their own. If they learn to do this, they will always be able to survive. In this case I would suggest purchasing a Thesaurus, OR learn how to search on the internet using Google, Yahoo or Alta Vista searches. It's not hard...simply type in what you are searching for and enter it.

Good question. My first guess was instinct. Wikipedia says the opposite of reason is "feeling." I've also heard "excuse" used in that way- but only from teachers who were scolding me for being late.
